Personality Overview
Years ago (ironically, on the same night my deceased wife DJed a wedding for her ex-husband in Chicago), I went online during some downtime and took the personality test at 16 Personalities.com. While no personality test is perfect, my results as an “Advocate” seemed to fit the bill, so no need to go into a deep analysis here.
To summarize, I try to see the world in the biggest of pictures, a sort of “Do onto others as you would have them do onto you” but at a global scale. That has led me into conflict with a variety of modern American beliefs but adopting such a mindset also provided me with a very clear moral compass. Personality Overview
To quote the 16 Personalities Advocate introduction, “Idealistic and principled, people with the INFJ personality type (Advocates) aren’t content to coast through life – they want to stand up and make a difference. For these compassionate personalities, success doesn’t come from money or status but from seeking fulfillment, helping others, and being a force for good in the world.” This description of me couldn’t be more accurate, as again, I see the world for what it is and, despite my sometimes severe introversion, I’ve tried to live my life not necessarily what was in my own best interests but the better interests of all.
Political Slant
I have voted Democrat all my life, not because they necessarily align with my own political beliefs but because the alternative is so much worse. Here in America, there’s really only two parties to choose from: Those who put money above all else and those who don’t. That’s not to say that there aren’t poor Republicans and rich Democrats but, by and large, the Democrats want equity and a fair chance for all, while Republicans–ultimately–just can’t get enough money to hoard and aren’t all that interested in sharing what they have or making the world a better place for all.
Religious Slant
My religious journey has taken me full circle in life; I was born an atheist and will die as one. Actually confirmed as a Lutheran back in the eighth grade, over time I began to recognize that it was all simply untrue; perhaps there was a Jesus Christ, but he was no god and certainly didn’t ascend into Heaven to absolve us of all our sins. As Carl Sagan once said, “Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence” and the evidence is wholly lacking. I think it’s far more likely that religion–formed to provide answers that science can not–offers a delusionary escape for those who need it. That said, I have many religious friends and I respect their right to believe what they wish.
Hobbies
Apart from eating, sleeping, working and building my BrowserQuests system the past ten years, there was pickup basketball at the local health club that I did for 25 years! Guys would show up at a predetermined time (playing three nights a week) and we’d play five-on-five, the first team to seven points the winner (all baskets counted as just one point). Many of these guys became friends and a few became very close friends, relationships I will always treasure. The game did get brutal at times–I broke a bone in my left hand, one in my right hand (a separate injury) and in November 2023 I broke my right ankle, requiring surgery to fix the break along with four tendons. But all the basketball was wonderful and I think it made a world of difference going into my cancer journey.
